DIY WOODEN BENCH TUTORIAL
A simple board from the hardware store, a set of hairpin legs, and some screws are the basic ingredient list to this versatile bench. Today I’ll be breaking it down in three easy steps for you.
1 . Cut Board
2. Prep board
3. Attach legs.
Easy enough?! Ok, let’s get started!
Before we do though, let’s assemble all our materials. I found everything I needed at Home Depot.
I recommend knowing how long you want your bench before you head to the store to pick it up. If you do, an associate should be able to cut it so size for you.

DIY BENCH STEP ONE: Cut your board to size
I happened to be recycling a board from a previous project, so I needed to cut mine down. I wanted a bench that was 12 inches wide and 4 ft long. So I measured it, ran downstairs quickly, and cut the wood board to the appropriate size.
DIY BENCH STEP TWO: Prep your bench board
This is the step that you could spend some time on if you wanted. Some people may just knock the splinters off their board with sandpaper and call it a day, while others may want to spend some more time creating a bench top with more character. For my bench, I sanded it down until the surface was smooth and flat, applied one coat of Minwax Provencial , sanded again to give it a weathered look, and then finished the piece with some wood finishing wax. For an even better seal, after I stain a piece, I love to seal with this Polycrylic protective finishing. As far as a Poly product go, it’s the easiest I’ve found to apply, and I really appreciate that it’s water based. The fumes don’t bother me at all.
DIY BENCH STEP THREE: Attach the legs
Now that your wooden bench top is prepped and ready, it’s time to attach the legs. I measured 1-3/4 inch inch from the sides, and 1/2 inch from the front and back. Then I aligned the legs with my measurements, and marked with a pen where each hole should be drilled. Once you have your measurements, drive those screws into your bench top, and you’ve got a solid wooden hairpin leg bench.
